Bossa Brazil: Roots & Wings
Bossa Brazil: Roots & Wings is a live concert that travels through nearly a century of Brazilian music, tracing one musical lineage from its classical beginnings to the sound the world now calls Bossa Nova, and beyond.
It's also a rare chance to see two familiar artists in an unfamiliar light. Camila Rivera is known here for sound healing and operatic voice work, but jazz was her first real musical home, the singing that shaped her before anything else, and the improvisational instinct she still carries into her sound healing today. Luz do Sol is known as the musician who gets everyone up and dancing, but tonight he steps into something more intimate and ceremonial, including time at the piano, an instrument he rarely plays in his concerts in Ubud.
The evening opens with Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of the first composers to bring a distinctly Brazilian voice into the world's concert halls, then moves into the late 1950s, when a new generation of Rio musicians turned samba and jazz inward into something quieter and more poetic: Bossa Nova. From there it travels through Afro-Brazilian roots and into the 1970s, when the Clube da Esquina musicians of Minas Gerais reimagined Brazilian music as spacious, emotional, almost spiritual.
Throughout, Camila and Luz share the story behind the songs: one Colombian, one Brazilian, both introduced to this music by their fathers. Expect songs by Tom Jobim, Vinícius de Moraes, Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfá, and Milton Nascimento, performed with opera trained voice, jazz phrasing, piano, and guitar.
No musical knowledge needed, just come ready to listen and receive. Seating is intimate, so arrive a little early to settle in.
An evening of history, intimacy, and two artists in a light you haven't seen them in before.
