DRIPPIN : A Hip Hop Tea Ceremony

06:00pm, Wed 21st Feb 2024

DRIPPIN : A Hip Hop Tea Ceremony
Tea lounge • Hip hop performance • DJ Sets

Ubud tastemakers and tea connoisseurs, the Cul•Cha Collective, takeover the Dragon Tea Temple for a night of puerh drip and hiphop performance.

Step back in time to ancient China and the tradition of “tea art”, where sages and scholars gathered around the tea pot to indulge their senses. They drank fine tea in an exceptional atmosphere, sharing cultural conversation while absorbed in the finest music and dance performances.

This art-form lives on in the CulCha Collective - with a modern twist. The old instruments have become NRYN’s turntables, the ancient poetry reimagined in Kamau Abayomi’s hiphop freestyles, and the calligraphy has morphed into graffiti. Tea-master Faye Jie steps from behind the tea table to exhibit the traditional dance of China, remixed with kung fu from the city streets.

The wise ones gather to both witness and express, therefore this is more than just a show. DJ sets and dance sessions give everyone the opportunity to share their inspiration, and the Tea Chi tea lounge grounds participants in comfort and conversation throughout the evening.

Cul•Cha Collective.

Cul•Cha Collective is a crew of tea servers, musicians, dancers, healers and ceremonialists. They create tea art, weaving traditional arts with modern methods. Their vision is to co-create a new spiritual culture each time they gather, a culture that can unite people across any perceived division. Their intimate Speakeasy Sessions began during the pandemic, bringing a refined-yet-stylized way to commune with the community using tea and music. Their visionary hip-hop explorations in the Tea Lounge Remixed are unique beyond possible replication, and their zen-style Quan Yin Tea Temple events present live guqin, Chinese poetry, and traditional Chinese dance.

NRYN • dj

A wanted beat criminal for audio espionage, sonic nomad NRYN (Hanumam Project, Cul•Cha Collective, Rhythm Mafia) is smuggling the thickest rhythm refugee cuts to Ubudian soundsystems. With that original hip hop mindset of playing any kind of track you can shake your @ss to, NRYN broke out of genre jail to mix world beats and good vibes in between his extracurricular Hanuman heists. A lifelong musician with innumerable influences, NRYN sculpts DJ sets to fit the specific time and place of the party - matching the aesthetics and elevating the mood. Bass, house, afro, latin, hiphop, and downtempo are all well-developed sonic signatures in his crates. His Tea Lounge Remixed events feature his original hiphop beats played live on samplers and drum machines. His latest album, CHI, infuses qigong and Shaolin kung fu into downtempo beats with bansuri flute. As the drummer for the Hanuman Project and other staple Ubud music groups, NRYN is known to transport audiences with his hypnotic live rhythms and make bodies move.
