What is “Bali FAB Island?”

Bali is declared as the world’s first “Fab Island” under the Fab City Global Initiative, bringing meaningful interventions that enrich, empower and scale the local regenerative economy. Bali is leading a shift in Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region towards the relocalization of production to support a sustainable and prosperous future for the region. This presents a massive opportunity that can scale to the other 17,000 islands that affects a population of 274 million people. Combining digital transition with local manufacturing capacities, Bali will pledge to become the first island in the world to produce almost everything it consumes by 2054.

The initiative was launched during Bali Fab Fest in October 2022 along with a 10-day immersive Fab Island Challenge where 50+ innovators from 20+ countries were involved to kickstart and prototype solutions that address the most pressing local issues around sustainability & life systems collaborating with local partners.

As a continuation of the seed initiative, Fab Lab Bali is creating programs to work with the local communities, the rich crafts culture, and the growing innovation ecosystem in the pursuit of to be a catalyst of explorers and practitioners who are working on the greatest challenge of our time: climate crisis and social exclusion.

Who’s This Event For?

Innovators, creative-thinkers, entrepreneurs, change-makers, sci-tech-enthusiasts, or everyone who's passionate about making innovations for regenerative futures with communities!

About Us

Fab Lab Bali is an open innovation lab in Bali for individuals, collectives, organisations, and companies to propose and develop meaningful interventions that enrich, empower, and scale Bali’s emerging regenerative economy. We are doing this by providing access to digital fabrication, prototyping facilities, and education. Our lab is located at Jimbaran Hub.

We are part of Meaningful Design Group and powered by the local partners Jimbaran Hijau, The Habibie Center, CAST Foundation, and global network of Fab City Foundation and Fab Foundation from MIT's Centre for Bits and Atoms, as well as other organizations. We serve as the interface for community innovation and implementation of the Meaningful Design principles and the local Fab City agenda in from Bali by building a collaborative network of research and innovation.
