Jongo (also known as caxambu or tabu) is a traditional Afro-Brazilian dance and musical genre that originated in the coffee plantations of southeastern Brazil. It was created by enslaved African men and women—primarily of Bantu origin from the Congo-Angola regions—and is widely recognized as one of the primary cultural ancestors of the modern samba.

While Samba gained popularity through the carnival, Jongo is more about simplicity, community, and ancestrality.

Historically, Jongo served as a powerful tool for community cohesion, spiritual devotion, and resistance against slavery.

Core Components of Jongo
The Roda (Circle): Jongo is performed inside a human circle (roda). While the community claps and sings around the perimeter, individual couples take turns stepping into the center to dance.

The Drums: The music is driven exclusively by percussion. Traditionally, it relies on two main fire-tuned drums made from hollow tree trunks and animal hide: the caxambu (the larger, lower-pitched drum) and the candongueiro (the smaller, higher-pitched drum).

Pontos (Chants): The songs, or pontos, use a call-and-response format between a soloist and the crowd. Enslaved people intentionally used highly metaphorical, encoded language in these lyrics to communicate, share news, or plan resistance without their owners understanding.

The Umbigada: A defining characteristic of the dance is the umbigada—a symbolic gesture where two dancers approach each other and gesture belly-to-belly without making actual physical contact, serving as an invitation or salute.

Cultural Status Today
Though it nearly faced extinction after the abolition of slavery in 1888, Jongo underwent a massive revival starting in the late 20th century. In 2005, the Brazilian National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) officially registered Jongo as an Immaterial Cultural Heritage of Brazil.

Today, community preservation groups, such as the famous Jongo da Serrinha in Rio de Janeiro, continue to pass down the rhythms, steps, and history to younger generations through dedicated workshops and annual festivals.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Noko started to learn Capoeira in 2000. Since then, he kept focusing on training and promoting Capoeira around Java. In 2006 he moved to Bali, started the first established Capoeira school in Bali and organized the first international Capoeira event on the island.

Since traveling to Brazil to experience the root of Capoeira, Noko has been invited to participate in many events and also to give workshops for kids and adults all around Asia, such as Hong Kong, East Timor, Taiwan, and more recently India. Together with his team at Capoeira Bali he wishes to continue to legitimately promote the art of Capoeira and Afrobrazilian culture in Bali.

Throughout the years Noko keeps developing his own approach, to simplify the complexity of Capoeira practice and make it accessible for different audiences. Noko enjoys any kind of safe and healthy physical practice, especially those that allows him to be playful and creative through movements.

Refund Policy:
If you are unable to attend this event, you are eligible for a full refund of the ticket price if you contact us at least 24 hours in advance of the published start time. Contact must be made via email to [email protected]  or in person at The Yoga Barn reception desk. We are NOT able to process refunds for any reason if you contact us less than 24 hours prior to the published start time.  We do not cover reimbursement of any associated booking fees that exceed our published ticket price.
Ticket Transfer:
Tickets are not transferrable to another person. The booking is only valid for the person whose name is printed on this ticket.
Late Arrival:
We recommend that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time. If you arrive after the published start time, you may be denied access and your booking will not be refunded.
Cancellation Policy:
If this event is canceled by The Yoga Barn prior to the start time, you are eligible for a refund of your ticket. We do not cover reimbursement of any associated booking fees that exceed our published ticket price. Please be aware that refunds may take up to 30 days.
