Listening Session: Sekan
In the late 20th century, immigrant musicians from the Indo-European, Moluccan, Papuan, Javanese-Surinamese, and Peranakan diaspora helped reshape cultural life in the Netherlands. Far from the archipelago, they recorded life-affirming soul, funk, pop, reggae, and rock songs that were never documented in the official archive.
Amsterdam-based record collector, researcher and Jiwa Jiwa founder Michiel Sekan’s book and catalogue, Soundwriters: The Incomplete Guide to Indonesian Diaspora Music (1969–1989), pays homage to these pioneers’ stories. In this seated Klymax Listening Session, Sekan will present a selection of these records and a live Q&A for a 60-person audience of close listeners.
Limited copies of Soundwriters will be available for sale on the night.
