ACT 1

  • Scene I

In a meadow near the castle, Prince Siegfried celebrates his coming of age with friends. The jester entertains, but the Queen’s sudden arrival interrupts the merriment. Though displeased, she is softened by a bouquet from the maidens. After she departs, the celebration resumes. As twilight falls, Siegfried sees swans flying overhead. Seized by the urge to hunt, he takes his bow and follows them into the forest.

  • Scene II

By a lake deep in the forest, the swans transform into maidens — victims of the sorcerer Rothbart’s spell, broken only by true love. Siegfried aims at a swan, but it becomes Odette, Queen of the swan-maidens. Captivated, he vows eternal love and fidelity, and Odette’s heart responds with hope. At dawn, she and her companions must return to swan form, gliding away as Siegfried longs for her return.

ACT 2

  • Scene III

At a royal ball, Siegfried must choose a bride, but he refuses, devoted to Odette. Rothbart arrives with his daughter Odile, disguised to resemble Odette. Enchanted, Siegfried declares Odile his choice, unknowingly betraying his vow. Rothbart triumphs, but Siegfried realizes the deception when he sees Odette’s vision outside the window. Distraught, he rushes back to the lake.

  • Scene IV

On the lake’s shore, Odette and the swan-maidens grieve. Siegfried begs forgiveness, reaffirming his love. Confronting Rothbart, Siegfried breaks the sorcerer’s wing, destroying his power. The spell is lifted, and as dawn breaks, love triumphs. The swan-maidens, Odette, and Siegfried are freed in the light of a new day.
