Celebrating HIP-HOP @50

August 11th 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. Born of disenfranchised communities, hip-hop became a powerful platform for expressing frustrations and advocating change. Through lyrics and beats, it brought attention to social issues, inequalities and the black power movement. Initially Hip-hop offered Black and Latino youth a form of grassroots creative expression. Its impact expanded beyond these communities to reach people all around the world regardless of origins, religions, cultures, etc. As an innovative, do-it-yourself youth culture, hip-hop reflects the principle of “making a way out of no way”. Hip-Hop is not a music genre but a culture (incl. Music - Mcing & DJing, dance - breakdancing, fashion, art, knowledge) and a global phenomenon that has shaped and continues to shape popular culture and many lives.
